Why should I get a permit now? Many stores (and jobs) are closed
The hospitality business has been affected more than any other industry by the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s understandable to be discouraged about your prospects for getting a job, (or your old job back), when things start returning to normal... and they will. We just don’t know when. Since nothing like this has happened before, we’re all dealing with lots of unknowns.
But don’t be discouraged! Things will get better. The vaccines will put this pandemic behind us. We just don’t know how long it will take.
But instead of just waiting for something to happen, doesn’t it makes more sense to use this time to anticipate the changes that will follow the pandemic, and start preparing for whatever happens so you are ready to go to work when things start getting better?
Here are some things to keep in mind:
1. A lot of people in the hospitality business lost their jobs - most of them, in fact.
2. It’s likely that a lot of those people have found other jobs or even found work in another fields during the layoffs.
3. When businesses start up again, and most of them will, some of their previous employees won’t be available to rehire.
4. That means there is going to be many new jobs available - and employers looking for new hires... like you.
5. If you’re just getting into the business, you will likely have a better chance of becoming employed... if you’re ready when the opportunity appears.
You will need an OLCC Alcohol Service Permit if you want to serve alcohol, and most hospitality businesses do. When you’re knocking on doors looking for a job, the first question most potential employer will ask is “Do you have a service permit?”
If you don’t have a permit, that employer may not think you’re serious about working in the business, and you’re less likely to be offered that job. Most employers in this business are ready to hire on the spot when they need help... but will only hire if the applicant is “ready to work”.
Getting your permit now will mean you are ready to work, serious about the job, and you’ll probably improve your chance of getting a job sooner.
