Why should I take an in-person class instead of an online course?

The hospitality industry is more than a food and beverage service business. It is mostly a customer service business. It does not take much time working in the business to learn that alcohol consumption can cause some drinking customers to make it very difficult to provide exceptional customer service. Yet that is the best way to handle ”problem customers”.

The OLCC Alcohol Server Education curriculum provides good, solid, helpful training about the alcohol sales laws you must follow, and describes in detail what a server must do to avoid breaking Oregon’s liquor laws.

We have added a substantial amount of practical instruction, role playing, and demonstrations to our curriculum so you will actually practice doing the ”friendly swap with friendly words”. Learning that the most important thing is not what you say, but how you say it. The three-legged stool model will help you prepare for those challenging times when you know you have to say no, but you are not sure you have the skill and confidence to do it. Hint: Never say no. Distract and re-direct to something acceptable. We will show you how, and help you build confidence that you can do it by actually doing it.

These are invaluable, real-world skills and techniques that will make you job easier, more enjoyable, and help you move up to more responsibility and better pay. You will not find these learning opportunities in on-line courses. Just as the job is interpersonal, so is learning the skills necessary to be successful at it, right from the start. And you just cannot do that through a computer screen.
